CONTINUUM I+II DELUXE TRIPLE VINYL PACKAGE

update: the production of the clear vinyl copies caused quality issues with the audio of the continuum album. to ensure the highest possible standard, we had to change the colour to a solid one. instead of the 400 copies on clear vinyl, there will now be 400 copies on solid yellow vinyl (which goes well with the album's artwork). the other 600 copies remain black. people who have ordered a clear vinyl copy, will automatically receive a yellow vinyl copy.

continuum is a collaboration between steven wilson and dirk serries. A multi-layered synonym for their collective ambition and vision, motivated by their immense passion for a wide-range of musical styles, ranging from spacious ambience to pounding doom metal. both albums - continuum 1 in 2005, and continuum 2 in 2007 - were released on cd only by the us record label soleilmoon, although tonefloat subsequently two double album sets with recyclings by vidnaobmana (tf027, 2006), and justin broadrick (tf051, 2010).
the two original albums are finally available on vinyl as a deluxe triple album set, with all three discs in separate picture sleeves, and housed in a custom printed pvc slipcase, complete with a 24x36 poster, all designed by carl glover. the set is a one-off and limited to 1000 copies in total, 400 on yellow vinyl, and 600 on black vinyl. pre-orders are available from our tonefloat store. pre-orders will be out circa july 10.

TONEFLOAT PRESENTS: A NEW WAVE OF JAZZ

tonefloat presents a new wave of jazz. a contemporary approach to the diy philosophy that grew sun ra's saturn label and the underground cassette scene. under the wings of tonefloat, and curated by dirk serries, this little label will focus itself upon a series of limited vinyl editions, in customized sleeves. featuring music that originates from a fascination for free jazz and all related and extracted.
the first album in the series is the selftitled yodok iii: an overpowering melancholy and intense combination of frequencies. this is where introspection and freejazz meet. yodok iii is tomas järmyr: drums, kristoffer lo: tuba, flugabone, effects, and dirk serries: electric guitar, effects. yodok iii will embark on a short tour in june with dates on 7th (kinkystar club, ghent), 8th (magasin4, brussels), 12th (worm, rotterdam) and the 13th (de singer, rijkevorsel).
the second album is _ashes and blues by void of expansion - tomas järmyr and dirk serries. a live date is set at studenter samfundet, trondheim (norway) on the 29th of august.

both albums will be out as limited editions of 240 copies on 180 grams black vinyl (with download code) in an embossed, stickered and handnumbered sleeve, and are available for pre-orders (release date june 13) from our tonefloat store. only a limited numbered of the 240 pressed copies are available through tonefloat - so don't miss out.

RECORD STORE DAY 2014 TONEFLOAT RELEASES

2014 sees two tonefloat releases join the record store day line-up. first up is there's a light in vein - reworked, a 3-track lp that features a justin k broadrick remix, and a machinefabriek/rutger zuydervelt rework of the original track from the microphonics xxi-xxv album from 2013. the use of ashes take up the whole of the second side with a mesmerizing 20 plus minute rework in three parts: a day (there’s a light in vein) (pt1. main vein / pt2. green worms / pt3. the light in my hand). the album is released as a limited edition of 300 copies on 180 grams black vinyl (with download code) in picture sleeve and is also available from our tonefloat store.
the use of ashes themselves have remixed the previously cd only 2004 release ice67 for an exclusive vinyl edition. the album is out as a limited edition of 300 copies on 180 grams white vinyl (with download code) in a stunning metallic print numbered gatefold picture sleeve and is also available from our tonefloat store. needless to say stock is low on both titles.

BASS COMMUNION BOX

a deluxe 4cd box set on tonefloat collecting many bass communion rarities, most of which were previously only released on vinyl. each disc comes in its own mini lp sleeve, collectively housed in a hardback slipcase box, with a 60 page booklet, all designed by carl glover, who has created all of the sleeve artwork for Bass Communion over the years. The set contains over 4 hours of music in total.
disc 1 contains the vajrayana 7 inch single from 2004, the indicates void vinyl lp from 2005, plus the bonus track from side 4 of the vinyl edition of ghosts on magnetic tape. the 2 tracks from vajrayana are full length versions that were previously edited down for the single.
disc 2 is a reissue of the pacific codex album recorded in 2006. originally also planned as a vinyl release, the extreme low frequencies and near silent passages in the piece proved problematic, so it was eventually released on cd by equation records in a very limited edition in 2008.
disc 3 collects 5 remixes done for darkroom, the use of ashes, theo travis, andrew liles and pyramids, most of which make their first appearance on cd. the theo travis remix is a previously unused version. bass xommunion remixes are usually complete reconstructions, taking a few sounds from the original piece and using them as the basis to create completely fresh works.
disc 4 collects the litany 12 inch single from 2009, a remix for 3 seconds of air, and a previously unreleased piece temporal, recorded in 2012 using only the sounds of clocks and other time-keeping devices as a sound source, and is an homage to harrison birtwistle’s 1971 piece chronometer, which used the same approach. an edited version of it was heard as the introduction to the watchmaker on the recent sw band tour in quadrophonic sound.
the box is out on may 20, 2014 as a limited edition of 2000 copies, that can be pre-ordered now from our tonefloat store. the set is also available from steven wilson's hq. please make sure your order is in as soon as possible, as the iem box set sold out in days!

TONEFLOAT CD BOX BONANZA

packaging has always been a key factor to how we want our records and cds. back in 2010 we compiled the complete i.e.m. catalogue in a lavishly designed and packaged four disc box. the box sold out in weeks and demand has been such that we've decided to press another 1000 copies, but that will be it. in tie with this repress, we are offering equally designed cd boxes by the use of ashes (compiling their white nights trilogy - all in their original japanese mini album sleeves, and complete with handmade booklet in wooden cover), sand snowman (the trilogy of albums that includes i'm not here, the twilight game, and two way mirror, all in their original japanese mini album sleeves), and fear falls burning's tonefloat cd's all in their original japanese mini album sleeves, and complete with a biographic booklet). copies can be ordered now from our tonefloat store.

DIRK SERRIES + TEUN VERBRUGGEN » ART OF COSMIC MUSINGS » TRANSMISSION

aptly titled art of cosmic musings is teun verbruggen's (who has worked with jef neve, arve henriksen, flat earth society, toots thielemans, and trevor dunn, to name a few, as well as with own bands the bureau of atomic tourism, chaos of the haunted spire and othin spake) and dirk serries’ (no introduction needed at the tonefloat premises) sonic expedition into the realm of music that closes the gap between jazz and the experimental minimal. teun’s expertise in organic drumming and dirk serries’ veteran artistry in purifying sound to create the maximum of effect unite in a musical mélange that draws from (free)jazz, shoegaze, psychedelic and ambient music. created live by intuition and played by ear. a fusion that is equally unique and familiar, a world of sound to dive into, to be overwhelmed by and to drift away with.
their debut transmission is out on january 9, 2014 as a limited edition of 300 numbered heavyweight double lp's with digital download, 75 of them on clear vinyl, 225 on black vinyl, and the album's official release concert is two weeks later at cc luchtbal, in antwerp (belgium) copies can be pre-ordered now from our tonefloat store.

MARK RITSEMA ft PETER VAN VLIET (THE USE OF ASHES) - THE LOVERS (BRASILIA) 7INCH

the lovers (brasilia) was written by mark j. ritsema (who released a critically acclaimed debut with polar twins on tonefloat last year) for crimson architectural historians as part of their exhibition 'the banality of good. six decades of new towns, architects, money and politics'. this traveling exhibition about the pros and cons of worldwide »new towns« opened at the venice architecture biennale on august 27, 2012, where the song was first performed. the song was recorded and produced by the use of ashes' peter van vliet at st. temple studios in may and june 2013. van vliet also added some treatments to the song.
the lovers (brasilia) is out on september 9 as a limited edition clear vinyl 7inch (300 copies). copies can be ordered now from our tonefloat store.

TRAVIS & FRIPP »FOLLOW« LIMITED COLOUR VINYL EDITIONS

last year's follow was a natural step forward for theo travis and king crimson mainman robert fripp's ongoing aural explorations. as with their debut thread, tonefloat was given the priviledge to release the steven wilson mixed and mastered release onto two heavyweight discs in three colour variations and complete with a numbered gatefold picture sleeve with innerbags.
follow will be out as a limited edition blue/black marbled vinyl 2lp (80 copies), a yellow/black marbled vinyl 2lp (160 copies) and a clear vinyl 2lp (260 copies)copies can be pre-ordered now from our tonefloat store.

MERCY GIANTS RETURN TO TONEFLOAT WITH NEW ALBUM »STEEL DUNGEONS, MIGHTY FOES«

mercy giants have been around since 1995. their well received 1999 debut hotel hell - sports & relax is an implosive cocktail of ambient, noise and five star pop songs. since then, influences as diverse as mathrock, lounge and hiphop were incorporated, and the dutch club circuit was toured repeatedly with increasing live impact. despite the members' many other activities (the use of ashes, march, demi mazurka, jelle buma, homemade empire), time was set aside to complete a new mercy giants album steel dungeons, mighty foes!, to be released on june 7, 2013. enter pure jazz and shoegaze, with prominent roles for vocals, piano, double bass and reverbed guitar. a small accompanying tour is scheduled for june with dates dBs, utrecht (7th, with riverside), paradox, tilburg (14th, with beequeen, entrance includes a free copy of the cd), and tsjechov, rotterdam (15th, free entrance).

THE TONEFLOAT INTERVIEWS

a series of exclusive tonefloat interviews, by tobias fischer.

SAND SNOWMAN - 4 november 2011
AKHET - 3 november 2011

TONEFLOAT LABEL NIGHT LONDON: 28 OCTOBER 2012

tonefloat presents its first label night in london at 229 the venue (229 great portland street, london, w1w 5pn). tickets available via 229 and the tonefloat store at £12 / 15 euros.

performing on the night (doors 7pm) will be judy dyble, sand snowman, the use Of ashes and the sleep of reason.

judy dyble, the legendary and reclusive former fairport convention and trader horne singer, has re-emerged with the most powerful and personal album of her 41 year career. co-produced and co-written by no-man's tim bowness and cromer museum's alistair murphy and described by the bbc as 'a sophisticated triumph', talking with strangers is a rich combination of seductive melodies, cinematic arrangements and poignant autobiographical reflections that references aspects of judy's distinguished folk prog rock past, while forging a wholly contemporary identity that draws on judy's personal experiences over the last two decades and her renewed enthusiasm for making music. judy will be performing a rare one off london show at the tonefloat records label night in to celebrate the album's re-release on vinyl. special guest tim bowness will be joining judy on stage to perform songs from talking with strangers as well as songs from her new album.

last year's the world’s not worth it saw sand snowman's gavan kearney working with a handpicked cast of collaborators - including long-time muse moonswift, porcupine tree’s steven wilson, eden house vocalist amandine ferrari and use of ashes guitarist maarten scherrenburg (on drums) - to create a blissful world of unconventional, yet instantly beguiling compositions. whilst still working within a by now familiar territory delineated by folk, ambient and progressive rock at a chambermusical volume, elements from the world of classical music are featuring more prominently than ever, taking the project into a new direction. sand snowman will make a rare live appearance during the first london tonefloat label night.

over the past few years, alongside their own solo projects, dirk serries (microphonics, fear falls burning, vidnaobmana) and jon attwood (yellow6) have been slowly working on a trilogy of albums. this trilogy combines their own individual takes on guitar drone and ambience into something with its own character and style. the resulting music sees their guitars blend into slowly shifting soundscapes that take you to a different place and time. each album is a continuation of the previous one but differs on an almost subliminal level, making the listener realise over time that the sleep of reason is a slowly mutating, thematic and specific musical entity.

born in 1979 as mekanik kommando, the band first surfaced in 1980 with a flexidisc included with dutch postpunk magazine 'vinyl'. mekanik kommando all but instantly found themselves in the midst of the ultra movement, signing with emi's wereldrecord imprint and guesting on the cure's pornography tour. soon, however, they would move on to different musical horizons. once they'd completed the transformation to a krautrock and 60s beat infused eerie blend of folk and psychedelia, the band changed their name into the use of ashes with the release of 1988s the castle of fair welcome. since then, new material has been published with increasing infrequency thanks to the formation's scrupulous attention to quality. following in the wake of firetree (1996) and ice67 (2004), the use of ashes returned to the limelight with the hand of tzafkiel, the first episode of their conceptual white nights trilogy - which they would follow up with glowing lights and, in 2012, flake of eternity.

DIRK POLAK AND MARK RITSEMA ARE POLAR TWINS WITH DEBUT ON TONEFLOAT

polar twins are the two baritones dirk polak and mark ritsema who fronted (in)famous dutch underground bands like mecano (dirk) and spasmodique (mark) in past decades. in 2005 the two met at an art exhibition and developed an almost instant, creative friendship when mark proudly joined the newly revived mecano, one of his favourite early 80s bands. by the time mecano collapsed for the second time, the two had written their first song changeless in athens. the bulk of wee small hours at swansneck was written during august 2008, in the after hours at mark’s place in rotterdam. late 2010 polar twins started recording, with the help and creative input of many friends and colleagues. composing and recording on and off, the last mixes were finished one memorable sunday in february 2012.

the mixture of classic pop, artrock, folk, chanson, with a continental european touch, flashes of avant-gardist texture, but love songs in any way, bring polar twins in the fortunate situation to present their product with solemn pride: a humble totem of consciousness.

wee small hours at swansneck is out as a regular edition on cd in japanese style mini album cardboard sleeve, as well as a limited edition of 200 copies on 180 grams clear vinyl in spotvarnished gatefold picture sleeve, with cd copy of the album.

polar twins embark on a short album release tour with the use of ashes with dates in amsterdam (paradiso), rotterdam (de unie) and nijmegen/beek (bartholomeuskerkje). check the gigs section for details.

MAARTEN VAN DER VLEUTEN : ARE YOU WORTHY?

for two decades, original dutch house pioneer and sonic enfant terrible maarten van der vleuten released under a variety of aliases. 2008’s high intolerance towards low energies saw van der vleuten leave his safety zone and open up for the first time – not only by releasing the album under his given name, but also by taking a more personal approach than ever before. the journey would be continued on 2010’s the scars remain and has now been taken to an intriguing acme with his latest full length are you worthy?, an eclectic blend of personal genres.

providing a sometimes fearful insight into his current state of mind, van der vleuten has conceptualised are you worthy? as an at times alienating soundtrack for both his own life and that of the listener. although his entirely idiosyncratic ambient visions are again at the heart of the music, van der vleuten never abandons his house roots either, intertwining these two sides of his musical personality into, dare we say it, his best album to date, and available on cd only.

the release date is october 9, and it's available for pre-order now from our store.
